What does the IES Program offer you?

You want to explore Europe and broaden your academic horizons? You want to develop specialized knowledge in European politics, history, business and culture? Can't fit an entire semester abroad into your schedule?
The IES program offers students from all over the world a short-term study abroad experience with different orientation throughout the year. All short-term programs focus on the acquisition and deepening of academic knowledge, language skill and intercultural competence:

Academic courses on Europe and the European Union

Depending on the program you are either taking a variety of introductory courses (Winter Program, Summer Program I+II) or in-depth courses (Fall Term Program) on Europe and the EU. Each program follows an interdisciplinary approach. Thus, class sessions cover diverse areas such as EU politics, history, law, international business and culture. Furthermore, the Fall Term Program serves as an opportunity for international students interested in further studies at the University of Tübingen at the M.A. or even PhD level.

Seminars are taught in English by Tübingen University faculty dedicated to the study of Europe. In addition, you meet with European politicians, debate on current European affairs, and attend guest lectures by experts from each of the different fields. Classes are small and individual mentoring is guaranteed at all times.

Study Trips

The program offers the great opportunity to apply the knowledge gained in the courses during various study trips. You will visit the center of the European decision making process – the European Parliament in Strasbourg – and the national parliament of Germany in Berlin – the Bundestag. And you get to meet with European politicians and decision makers of European organisations.

Strasbourg – Visit the only supranational and democratically elected parliament of the world: The European Parliament. Stroll through the old picturesque city center with its breathtaking cathedral, and enjoy the delicious Alsatian, thus French, cuisine.

Berlin – Enjoy one of Europe’s most vibrant metropolises buzzing with life, culture and arts, discuss current issues with a member of the German parliament at the Bundestag, visit museums and galleries, and get the opportunity to experience history in Germany’s capital.

Amsterdam/The Hague – Discover two Dutch cities full of European history, traditions and culture, visit the Anne Frank House and museums which are renowned all around the word, and learn more about the legal foundations of Europe and Human Rights.

Stuttgart – Experience one of Europe’s most innovative and economically successful cities/regions, visit the impressive Mercedes Benz Museum, its cars and architecture, and don’t let the opportunity slide to try more of the outstanding Swabian food.

Company Visits

Visit influential and famous German companies (like Mercedes, Porsche, Ritter Sport) in the economically strong region of Baden-Württemberg and learn more about doing business in Europe from a more practiceoriented perspective.

German Language Courses

Each program offers German language courses on different proficiency levels (A1-B2). Students with advanced knowledge of the German language practice their German together with a tutor (C1-C2). The focus will be on speaking and listening to improve students' language competence in everyday situations. The courses will be taught by the University's own qualified instructors from the Department of German as a Foreign Language and Intercultural Programs. Further information on the different proficiency levels: CEFR

Intercultural Competence

You will gain one of the key qualifications in an increasingly globalized world: Intercultural competence. In a workshop you will reflect on your intercultural experience in Germany. Studying in a diverse, multicultural group will further foster your knowledge about other cultures.

Buddy Program

Within the Buddy Program a student of the University of Tübingen teams up with an IES participant. One German “buddy” will take care of you during your entire stay in Tübingen. Your German buddy will help you settle in and will allow you to experience German student life first-hand.

Cultural Activities

You will get the chance to meet German students, experience German culture and explore Tübingen and its surroundings in various cultural and social activities (e.g. pretzel baking, punting tour on the Neckar river, bowling)
