For example, they help us figure out which of your emails are spam, what results to show you when you search on Google, how a self-driving car should navigate its environment, or even how a computer can beat the best Jeopardy and Go players! What do all of these examples have in common? They are all situations in which a computer program can carry out inferences in the face of uncertainty at a speed and accuracy that far exceed what we could do in our heads or on a piece of paper.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">In this data analysis and computer programming course, you will learn the principles of probability and inference. We will put these mathematical concepts to work in code that solves problems people care about. In this mathematics course, we will examine optimization through a Business Analytics lens. You will be introduced to the to the theory, algorithms, and applications of optimization. Linear and integer programming will be taught both algebraically and geometrically, and then applied to problems involving data. Students will develop an understanding of algebraic formulations, and use Julia/JuMP for computation. Theoretical components of the course are made approachable, and require no formal background in linear algebra or calculus.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">The recommended audience for this course is undergraduates, as well as professionals interested in using optimization software. font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">First, we will introduce the field of System Dynamics.  Developed at MIT, system dynamics is an approach that examines and models complex systems that feature interacting, non-linear, and dynamic elements.  The objective is to better understand the underlying features of a complex system and to recommend policies and other actions to improve overall performance. </div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; Are you interested in robotics, and have heard of, or tried, “line-following" or “PID control” and want to understand more?</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Feedback control is a remarkably pervasive engineering principle. Feedback control uses sensor data (e.g. brightness, temperature, or velocity) to adjust or correct actuation (e.g. steering angle, motor acceleration, or heater output), and you use it all the time, like when you steer a bicycle, catch a ball, or stand upright. But even though applications of feedback are very common, the subject is an uncommonly compelling example of mathematical theory guiding practical design. In this engineering course we will introduce you to the theory and practice of feedback control and provide a glimpse into this rich and beautiful subject.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Each week we will begin with a mathematical description of a fundamental feedback concept, combined with on-line exercises to test your understanding, and will finish with you designing, implementing, measuring, and analyzing a hardware system, that you build, for controlling a propeller-levitated-arm feedback system.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">You will not need a background in calculus or software engineering to succeed in this class but you should be familiar with algebra and mechanical forces, have some exposure to complex numbers, and be comfortable with modifying mathematical formulas in short computer programs.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">This is a lab course, and in order to complete the weekly assignments, you will need to purchase/acquire a list of parts.
