Deadline: 30 August 2016.

Description

Wellcome Trust is inviting junior researchers in low and middle-income countries who wish to gain research experience and high-quality research training at the Masters level, to apply for the Masters Fellowships in Public Health and Tropical Medicine. This scheme encourages research on infectious and non-communicable diseases of relevance to local, national or global health.
Research projects could be in the following areas: demographic, social science and health economic studies; epidemiological, field and community based studies; health care systems and policy research; measurement of infectious and chronic disease burden; population studies; clinical trials and case control studies; studies of disease mechanisms in the natural host; determinants of disease susceptibility and resistance; and immunity or resistance in natural hosts or vectors..

Benefits

The fellowship provides up to 30 months’ support. A period of 12 months should normally be dedicated to undertaking a taught Masters course at a recognised centre of excellence, combined with up to 18 months to undertake a research project. Tuition fees for the Masters course will be covered by the fellowship and fellows will receive a stipend (the quantum of which depends on the location on the course) while undertaking the Masters course.
Masters degrees by distance learning are also supported under the fellowship.
While undertaking the research fellowship, fellows will be given a salary and compensated for project-dedicated research expenses (e.g. consumables, small items of equipment, collaborative travel and support to attend scientific meetings, fieldwork and data collection) and research management and support costs. Overseas allowances and collaborative travel costs will be given where appropriate. A flexible funding allowance (capped at £50,000) and an inflation allowance will also be given.

Eligibility

Applicants have to be nationals of low and middle-income countries and hold an undergraduate degree in a subject relevant to tropical medicine or public health (clinical or non-clinical). They have to be at an early stage in their careers, with limited research experience, but have a demonstrated interest in or aptitude for research. Applicants must be based in a low or middle-income country for their research project and must identify an eligible sponsoring institution in a low- or middle-income country to administer the Fellowship for the full tenure of the award.
The taught course can be anywhere in the world, but fellows must be based in a low or middle-income country. Those intending to be based in the UK, Republic of Ireland or another high-income country are ineligible. Masters Fellowships in Public Health and Tropical Medicine are not available to researchers in India. Those from India should instead apply for funding under the Wellcome Trust/Department of Biotechnology India Alliance.

Application

Applications are accepted 3 times a year. The next deadlines is 30 August 2016.
