But money matters too: energy solutions that ignore economic costs are not realistic—particularly in a world where billions of people currently can’t afford access to basic energy services. Then we focus on the two main measurement technologies: next generation sequencing and microarrays. We then move on to describing how raw data and experimental information are imported into R and how we use Bioconductor classes to organize these data, whether generated locally, or harvested from public repositories or institutional archives. Genomic features are generally identified using intervals in genomic coordinates, and highly efficient algorithms for computing with genomic intervals will be examined in detail. Statistical methods for testing gene-centric or pathway-centric hypotheses with genome-scale data are found in packages such as limma, some of these techniques will be illustrated in lectures and labs.</div><div align="left" style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Given the diversity in educational background of our students we have divided the series into seven parts. You can take the entire series or individual courses that interest you. If you are a statistician you should consider skipping the first two or three courses, similarly, if you are biologists you should consider skipping some of the introductory biology lectures. Note that the statistics and programming aspects of the class ramp up in difficulty relatively quickly across the first three courses. We visit the places where new ideas and practices were spawned, and we look at some of their unanticipated consequences.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">In the three subsequent mini-courses, we seek answers to a second question: What are the best ways of lifting the performance of American schools to a higher level? To explore these questions, we look at ideas and proposals of those who want to save our schools—be it by reforming the teaching profession, holding schools accountable, or giving families more school choices. In interviews with reform proponents and independent experts, we capture the intensity of the current debate. In the end, we do not find any silver bullets that can magically lift schools to a new level of performance, but we do pinpoint the pluses and minuses of many new approaches. These three subsequent mini-courses will launch later in the fall and continue into 2016.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Each mini-course contains five to eight lectures, with each lecture containing approximately three videos. Using a wide variety of examples from the collections of Harvard’s Houghton Library, it will familiarize you with basic terms and concepts and give you a “feel” for the shapes, sizes, formats, materials and considerations of craft that went into the making of the book as we know it.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Throughout the Middle Ages there existed an intimate relationship between making and meaning. Codices were tactile as well as visual objects designed to engage multiple senses. In the illuminated manuscript, it is often impossible to distinguish neatly between text and image; rather, letters assume imagistic forms and images take the form of letters.</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">Bookmakers were sensitive to the interplay of materials, from the parchment of the pages to the wooden boards, designed to protect the contents. Each of these elements conditioned a reader’s interaction with the book. Bookmaking required a significant material investment. To gain access to the rest, you need to learn the art and science of reading medieval handwriting,</div><div style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1em !important; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 1em;">This module of <em style="box-sizing: border-box;">The Book: Histories Across Time and Space</em> introduces students to the world of medieval paleography, the science of reading old handwriting. This particular module focuses on notarial handwriting from the city of Marseille in the 14th and 15th centuries. The module features household inventories, which identify some of the fascinating objects found in people’s houses. Assessments and quizzes will allow you to track your progress as you move from letter-group to letter-group. It must be possible for applicants to carry out most of their research in Florence with the resources available in the city and at I Tatti. Preference is given to a postdoctoral research project. Projects could also represent a significant reworking of a dissertation. Special consideration may be given to candidates without regular access to research materials and facilities available in Italy.</div> <div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;"> One of the I Tatti fellowships, sponsored by a generous grant from the Florence Gould Foundation, is designated for scholars who a) work on a Franco-Italian Renaissance topic (which includes any project exploring the contact between the geographic areas of Italy and France in the early modern period); b) reside in France; or c) have French citizenship. Candidates who fall into one or more of these categories should indicate their status in the penultimate section on the application form.</div> <div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;"> The Fellow is responsible to obtain a visa, <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">permesso di soggiorno</em>, and health coverage (and, if appropriate, for accompanying family members). The Fellow must determine if a visa is required and, if necessary, obtain one before travel.</div> <div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;"> Renewals or repeats of an I Tatti Fellowship are not granted. Starting September 1, Fellows are expected to spend at least three days a week at the Villa and are required to live in Florence or the surrounding area. They may not take on any other obligations such as teaching positions, even part-time ones, during any part of their Fellowship year.</div> <div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;"> Fellows are offered a study, use of the Biblioteca Berenson, lunches on weekdays, and various other privileges. The stipend is $50,000, plus a supplement towards relocation expenses. There are several apartments on I Tatti property, rent free, but with charges for utilities.
