<tr><td><b><u>Purpose</u></b><br />
<strong><em>The Global Leaders Fellowship is for incoming graduate students (master's and doctoral) at the George Washington University</em></strong> who will return to their countries of origin to apply skills learned through their formal education at the GW. The fellowship is intended for GW graduate students who will be future leaders in their fields in their home countries.<br />
<strong>This fellowship is for students who have not studied or worked in the U.S. or other countries aside from their home country.</strong><br />
<strong>Current GW graduate students are not eligible for this fellowship.</strong><br />
<b><u>Award</u></b><br />
Three Global Leaders Fellowships, which will cover up to 18 credit hours will be awarded for 2016-17. The grantee is to provide funds from other sources for books, living, and other expenses, and must provide certification of this support. A Fellowship is renewable each year for a cumulative maximum of three years for Master's candidates and up to five years for doctoral candidates. A grantee must submit renewal materials for the Fellowship each year; renewal is contingent upon the grantee's grades (GPA of 3.0 or better). The Fellowship is valid for one degree only. Fellowships apply to the fall and spring semesters. Awards for the summer sessions are by petition only and subject to available funding.<br />
<b><u>Eligibility Requirements</u></b><br />
Students holding or intending to apply for an F-1 visa (J-1 visa is eligible for Fulbright applicants only. <strong>Note that other visa types are not eligible</strong>.) and who are from the following countries or regions (chosen based on protocol arrangements and areas of the world underrepresented at GW) are eligible to apply.<br />

Please note that permanent residents, resident aliens and U.S. Citizens are not eligible for this fellowship.<em><strong> Applicants must have an F-1 (J-1 visa for Fulbright applicants only), no exceptions</strong></em>.<br />
Fellowships are awarded to highly qualified incoming GW full-time graduate degree program seeking students who have gained admission to the University and whose program is on the main Foggy Bottom Campus. Students need to apply for admission separately through the online process. No Fellowship applicants will be considered who have not completed the admissions application, including payment of their application fee. <em><strong>Fellows may hold a F-1 visa (other visas are not eligible. J-1 visas are eligible for Fulbright applicants only).</strong></em> As part of the admissions process, applicants must have passed the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 600 on the paper-based exam or 100 on the internet based exam, or an IELTS overall band score of 7.5 (with no individual band below 6.0).<br />

Secchia Building, 1860 19th Street NW, Washington, DC. Fellows will lead the project from start to finish, utilizing the Foundation’s materials and Italian American artifacts to create an exhibit with a constructed narrative. Fellows will also create a sample of this exhibit for the NIAF 41st Anniversary Gala Weekend, October 14-15, 2016, where the fellows will serve as docents for the expected footprint of over 2,000 people.</span><br />

This fellowship gives students the rare opportunity to have complete responsibility for the execution of a full exhibit, helping to build students’ resumes and portfolios. <br />This fellowship aims to support the work of scholars in the humanities or social sciences, librarians, archivists, and data science professionals whose research interests or practice cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries and actively employ technology in their work. Projects can address any aspect of the Italian Renaissance, broadly understood historically to include the period from the 14<span style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 0; position: relative; top: -0.5em; vertical-align: baseline;">th</span> to the 17<span style="font-size: 12px; line-height: 0; position: relative; top: -0.5em; vertical-align: baseline;">th</span> century, and geographically to include transnational dialogues between Italy and other cultures (e.g. Latin American, Mediterranean, African, Asian etc.). Projects should apply digital technologies such as mapping, textual analysis, visualization, or the semantic web to topics in fields such as art and architecture, history, literature, material culture, music, philosophy, religion, and history of science.</div>

I Tatti offers Fellows the precious time they need to pursue their studies with a minimum of obligations and interruptions together with a maximum of scholarly resources—a combination that distinguishes the Harvard Center from similar institutions. In order to foster a collaborative spirit, Fellows are expected to live in the Florence area and to spend at least three days a week at the center. Lunch and tea are served each weekday, and the I Tatti community takes shape over these convivial occasions. Each year, a limited number of activities organized at I Tatti are reserved for the Fellows, and they join the wider community at conferences, lectures, and concerts.</div>

This is a residential fellowship of 4 or 6 months in length that will provide the time, space, and resources necessary to discover, explore, and build. Up to two fellowships will be awarded every year.</div>

A PhD is required for scholars in the humanities and social sciences; in exceptional cases, applications from advanced PhD (ABD) students will be considered. A Master’s degree is required for librarians, archivists, and data science professionals. A background in programming, library sciences, computer graphics, computational linguistics, or other fields relevant to digital humanities research is highly desirable. Candidates should possess the technical skills to carry out their project at the time of application. The selection committee aims to assess the ability of candidates to contribute in a collegial way to the intellectual life of the Harvard Center.</div>

Short-term Fellowships at I Tatti can be held only once and cannot be deferred. Short-term Fellowships are intended for scholars who have not previously held appointments at I Tatti (with the exception of Graduate Fellows).</div>

<strong>Terms</strong></h3>

The stipend is $4,000 per month, plus a one-time supplement (maximum, $1,500) towards relocation expenses. When possible, a one-bedroom apartment will be set aside for the Fellow’s use, rent free, but with charges for utilities. If an apartment is not available, $1000 per month will be offered to help offset rental costs. The Fellowships are funded by a generous grant from Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">
Applicants should indicate their preference between fall (September through December) and winter-spring (January through June). Fellows are required to spend at least three days a week at the Villa and to live in Florence or the surrounding area. Fellows enjoy all the privileges of the Harvard Center, including use of the Biblioteca Berenson seven days a week and lunch with other Appointees from Monday through Friday. Short-term Fellows do not receive an office or study, but they will have their own desk or carrel in the Library itself. Fellows may not take on any other obligations such as teaching positions, even part-time ones, during any part of their Fellowship period.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">
The Fellow is responsible to obtain a visa, <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">permesso di soggiorno</em>, and health coverage (and, if appropriate, for accompanying family members). The Fellow must determine if a visa is required and, if necessary, obtain one before travel.</div>

Also welcome are projects on museum and collecting history, and on the survival of the Renaissance in modern art and architecture (including photography and landscape architecture), in literature and music, and in philosophy and political thought.</div>

Priority will be given to early and mid-career scholars.  Projects can address the historiography or impact of the Renaissance on any field, including art and architecture, landscape architecture, history, literature, material culture, music, philosophy, religion, and science. It must be possible for applicants to carry out most of their research in Florence. I Tatti welcomes applications from scholars from all nations and gives special consideration to candidates without regular access to research materials and facilities in Italy. Applications are evaluated by international scholars. The selection committee aims to assess the ability of candidates to contribute in a collegial way to the intellectual life of the Harvard Center.</div>

The stipend is $4,000 per month, plus a one-time supplement (maximum, $1,500) towards relocation expenses. When possible, a one-bedroom apartment will be set aside for the Fellow’s use, rent free, but with charges for utilities. If an apartment is not available, $1000 per month will be offered to help offset rental costs. The Fellowships are funded by a generous grant from The Lila Wallace – Reader’s Digest Fund.</div>

Applicants should indicate their preference between fall (September through December) and winter-spring (January through June). Fellows enjoy all the privileges of the Harvard Center, including use of the Biblioteca Berenson seven days a week and lunch with other Appointees from Monday through Friday. Short-term Fellows do not receive an office or study, but they will have their own desk or carrel in the Library itself. Fellows may not take on any other obligations such as teaching positions, even part-time ones, during any part of their Fellowship period.</div>

I Tatti offers Fellows the precious time they need to pursue their studies with a minimum of obligations and interruptions together with a maximum of scholarly resources—a combination that distinguishes the Harvard Center from similar institutions. In order to foster a collaborative spirit, Fellows are expected to live in the Florence area and to spend at least three days a week at the center. Lunch and tea are served each weekday, and the I Tatti community takes shape over these convivial occasions. Rather than present a traditional paper at the end of the year, Fellows give informal presentations in the early Fall. This provides an opportunity to explore problems and questions and receive valuable feedback from other members of the community during the extended discussion period. Each year, a limited number of activities organized at I Tatti are reserved for the Fellows, and they join the wider community at conferences, lectures, and concerts.</div>

Fellows are selected by an international and interdisciplinary committee that welcomes applications from scholars from all nations. The committee aims to assess the ability of candidates to contribute in a collegial way to the intellectual life of the Harvard Center. It pays special attention to the strength of the proposed project and its potential to yield original results, and to the candidate’s curriculum vitae.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">
At the time of application, scholars must hold a PhD, <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">dottorato di ricerca</em>, or an equivalent degree. They must be conversant in either English or Italian and able to understand both languages. They should be in the early stages of their career, having received a PhD between 2006-2015 and have a solid background in Italian Renaissance studies. (NB: The PhD certificate must bear a date between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2015, inclusive.)</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">
The project must represent advanced research in the Italian Renaissance, broadly defined historically as the period ranging from the 14th to the 17th centuries and geographically to include transnational dialogues between Italy and other cultures (e.g. Latin American, Mediterranean, African, Asian etc.). Subjects covered include art and architecture, history, literature, material culture, music, philosophy, religion, and science. Scholars can also apply to work on the transmission and circulation of ideas, objects, and people during the Renaissance, into and beyond the Italian peninsula, or on the historiography of the Italian Renaissance, including the rebirth of interest in the Renaissance in later periods. It must be possible for applicants to carry out most of their research in Florence with the resources available in the city and at I Tatti. Preference is given to a postdoctoral research project. Applicants should demonstrate that they have already completed the necessary preliminary work to establish that the project shows promise. Projects could also represent a significant reworking of a dissertation. Special consideration may be given to candidates without regular access to research materials and facilities available in Italy.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 1.5em; padding: 0px;">
One of the I Tatti fellowships, sponsored by a generous grant from the Florence Gould Foundation, is designated for scholars who a) work on a Franco-Italian Renaissance topic (which includes any project exploring the contact between the geographic areas of Italy and France in the early modern period); b) reside in France; or c) have French citizenship. Candidates who fall into one or more of these categories should indicate their status in the penultimate section on the application form.</div>

recent postdoctoral scientists to conduct independent research that is broadly
related to the science goals of NASA's <a href="http://exep.jpl.nasa.gov/" target="_nexsci"><span style="color: #776b9e; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">Exoplanet Exploration Program.</span></a> The primary goal of
missions within this program is to discover and characterize planetary systems
and Earth-like planets around nearby stars. Sagan Fellowships are joined by two
other NASA astrophysics theme-based fellowship programs: the <a href="http://cxc.harvard.edu/fellows/" target="_nexsci"><span style="color: #776b9e; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">Einstein Fellowship Program</span></a> which
supports the Physics of the Cosmos research, and the <a href="http://www.stsci.edu/institute/smo/fellowships/hubble" target="_nexsci"><span style="color: #776b9e; text-decoration: none; text-underline: none;">Hubble

observational, or instrumental. This program is open to applicants of any
nationality who have earned (or will have earned) their doctoral degrees on or
after January 1, 2013, in astronomy, physics, or related disciplines. The
fellowships are tenable at U.S. host institutions of the fellows' choice,
subject to a maximum of one new fellow per host institution per year (see note
on host institutions below). The duration of the fellowship is up to three
years: an initial one-year appointment and two annual renewals contingent on
satisfactory performance and availability of NASA funds.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
